Activision announces another new addition for their Call of Duty series

So, days before the release of the most anticipated game of the year “Modern Warfare 2″, during an earnings Q&A on Thursday, Activision announced another addition to the Call of Duty family is on it’s way. This time around Treyarch is behind the wheel for the 2010 release and while not much information has been released concerning the actual game itself, rumors fueled by gaming news site Kotaku suggest they are moving away from WWII this time.

While Treyarch has not released a Call of Duty game since 2008, Activision has been pumping one out for the last four years straight. In fact, at the same press release Activision also announced plans to over-produce another popular series of theirs: Guitar Hero. No title yet, but considering this will be the 6th Guitar Hero game since it’s release in 2005, I’m going to take a stab in the dark and say that Activision is fast becoming the next EA games. Mass producing games in an effort to control the spending dollar of mindless consumer controlled gamers who take this in like cocaine. Even better, they target it to kids in my son’s age group (he’s 12) so that all I will hear after Christmas is “How awesome” the new guitar hero will be… thanks Activision.

What I want to know is why the makers of gaming consoles like Microsoft and Sony don’t start taking control like Nintendo did back in the day. My girl KellyJaye reminded me the other day that Nintendo put their seal of quality on games and then started putting limits on how many games a year each company can produce for their system. It didn’t stop crap games from being produced, but it helped put a limit on how many were out there and changed consumers minds about video games.

Curious to see what I’m talking about?
Here’s a related video.
See you in a few days when I switch the table and rave about how awesome Modern Warfare 2 is… damn it.

  • The timing just confirms how the almighty dollar is pushing publishers’ agendas. Activision wants to ride the coattails of Modern Warfare 2 and generate buzz for another title. Granted, World at War is one of my top games, but I hope they don’t commit to titles and rush product out the door just to line their pockets. I don’t want to see this series turn into another Medal of Honor.
